The Book
Nepal began the transition from the 14 century absolute monarchy to a 20 century multiparty democracy and constitutional monarchy in 1990. During the brief parliamentary period that followed as many as nineteen different Communist parties appeared. Frustrated with government policies the largest the Communist Party of Nepal withdrew from the political process in 1994 and then in 1996 launched a People's War hoping to install a Maoist government. Aggravating the political situation Crown Prince Dipendra killed King Birendra and most of the royal family in a bloody murder suicide on June 1 2001. Like Thailand and Cambodia the monarchy in Nepal has been an anchor for the transition and the murdered King Birendra had helped hold the country together through the collapse of ten governments in ten years combined with a growing Maoist insurgency. The unpopularity of the new king an economic crisis in an already desperately poor country and the growing clout of the rebels all suggested that Nepal's democratic transition would face further trials in coming years. This book highlights some of the most crucial issues which deteriorating the democratic processes in Nepal.
