The Book
The articles collected in this book cover a range of development issues of great contemporary importance: mobility and rural livelihoods, rural-urban relations and regional development, urban environment and development and food security in both rural and urban Nepal. Most of the articles are based on research done in west central Nepal since the early 1990s. Written by the most prolific and insightful geographer working in Nepal today, this book helps us to understand the many facets of changes that are happening in the lives of rural and urban Nepalis. As Nepal and its economy gets increasingly more integrated with the rest of the world through the process of globalization, the articles provide detailed analyses of how Nepali households and communities are affected by this process. This book should be read by all academics and students who want to understand contemporary Nepal, and policy-makers and managers who want to design and implement development interventions.
Jagannath Adhikari, PhD, is a geographer associated with Martin Chautari in Kathmandu. He is the author or co-author of several books including The Beginnings of Agrarian Change: A Case Study in Central Nepal (1996), Food Crisis in Nepal: How Mountain Farmers Cope (1999), The New Lahures: Foreign Labour Migration and the Remittance Economy of Nepal (2001) and Pokhara: Biography of a Town (2002). He has also edited or co-edited over a half dozen books on themes related to poverty, environmental justice and urbanization.
