Nepal is a heterogeneous country of different ethnic groups with different cultures and languages. This Himalayan Kingdom is also very rich in natural wealth, varied flora and fauna dwelling in different topographical variations. Nepalese plants are known by different names by different people. After many years of studies a book of this kind has been possible to publish in the dictionary form to give a complete Nepali plant names. With concise information on economic botany, history of plant exploration and phytogeography it gives the plant names in Nepali, Newar, Gurung, Rai, Tharu, Tamang, Limbu, English and so on.
Out of 7000 expected flora in Nepal, this book only includes more than 2000 plants names of Nepal, which includes plant names from different parts of the country; from hills, high mountains, valleys, duns, terai etc. Though plant names vary from people to people with their localities and languages, one established pant names are not changeable as do the Latin names.
Though Nepal has a history of plant collection since 1802-3, Nepalese plant names were not so much popularized, hence most layman, forester, agriculturist, horticulturist and others were not familiar with the Latin as well as other local names, So the author hopes this book will fulfill such demands in Nepal and abroad.
