The Book
Nepal, which occupies the central section of the Himalayan range, is inhabited by an extraordinary variety of peoples. The mountains, hills and plains of the country comprise a contact zone for ethnic groups with origins in today's Sechuan-Yunnan highlands and caste groups whose original ancestors came from the Central Asian steppes. Isolated for centuries behind the Himalayan wall to the north and the Tarai jungles of the south, and separated from each other by high ridges and deep rivers, the peoples of Nepal have preserved their diversity into the modern era. A unique collaboration between a British artist and a Nepali scholar, this book celebrates that diversity in a country that is like no other.

About the Author(s):
Jan Salter was born in Southampton, England. After traveling the world in the late 1960s and early 1970s she finally settled in Nepal. Salter was captivated by the variety she found in the country's population, and before long she was walking the hill trails, drawing faces in pencil. The Kathmandu-based artist's sketches were already widely appreciated when a few years ago she began to work in oils. Salter's paintings and drawings of the people of Nepal are immediately recognizable for their truthfulness and soul.
Harka Gurung was born in the village of Ngadi, Lamjung, beneath Manasalu Himal in central Nepal. With a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (1965), Gurung is a highly regarded researcher and a prolific writer on Himalayan life and sciences. He was Minister of State (1975- 78) in His Majesty's Government of Nepal and headed the National Planning Commission (1968-75). In this volume, Gurung provides comprehensive and up-to-date information on the peoples of Nepal, in all their variety and situations.
